Monday Maker Series: Meet Gold Rush Wax Co. of Mokelumne Hill, CA

Maker Introduction

Welcome to another installment of The Motherlode Co.’s Monday Maker Series! This week, we’re thrilled to introduce Amy Betsch, the maker behind Gold Rush Wax Co., where every candle tells a story and every scent makes history.

A lifelong history buff, Amy started pouring candles when her youngest child left for college. What began as a calming hobby quickly turned into a business filled with purpose, creativity, and warmth. Inspired by the rich heritage of California’s Gold Rush, Amy now hand-pours coconut-soy candles that capture the spirit of the past — and light up the present.

Hand-poured history: The History Buff behind Gold Rush Wax Co!

A Candle That Started with a Sneeze

Amy’s journey into candle-making was sparked not just by passion — but by a sneeze. Frustrated by allergic reactions to commercial candles, she began researching what made some candles harder on the senses. Her findings pointed to low-quality waxes and chemical-heavy fragrance oils. So, she got to work creating her own — clean-burning, phthalate-free, and made with natural coconut-soy wax.

Today, Gold Rush Wax Co. candles offer the soft flicker and rich aroma of traditional candles — without the toxins or headaches.

History, in a Tin

Each Gold Rush Wax Co. scent is more than a fragrance — it’s a story waiting to be told. Some favorites from her core line include:

  • Black Bart’s Brew – A rich, bold coffee scent inspired by the poetic outlaw himself
  • American River – Fresh, sunny, and nostalgic — like skipping stones under the California sun
  • Panama – A tropical-desert blend that reflects the treacherous journey many 49ers took through Central America

American River: summer sun and nostalgia in a tin.

The Westward Collection

One of Amy’s most beloved creations is the Westward Collection — a trio of scents inspired by the three historic routes prospectors took to California during the Gold Rush:

  • Cape Horn: Cool, salty, and citrusy — this scent channels the long voyage around South America
  • Overland: Earthy and warm — evoking campfires, trail dust, and wild pine
  • Panama: Also available as a room spray, offering a bright, exotic experience rooted in a perilous shortcut to fortune

Cape Horn: a candle that channels the sea-bound journey west.

Panama Room Spray: a nod to a perilous passage and a fresh escape.

More Than Scent — A Memory

Amy has seen firsthand how fragrance brings memories flooding back. Customers often pause at her booth, catch a scent, and suddenly find themselves transported — to a grandmother’s kitchen, a father’s cologne, a long-lost summer.

She keeps one quote at the heart of her work:
“Nothing brings to life again a forgotten memory like fragrance.” – Christopher Poindexter

These emotional reactions are what keep Amy pouring — candle by candle, story by story.

Holiday magic: a warm and festive scene reminiscent of the Gold Rush.

A Maker Rooted in Community

From Murphys Irish Day to the Amador County Fair, Amy loves meeting customers face to face. While summer heat can be tough on candles (and candlemakers!), she thrives during what she calls “Candle Season” — when cooler fall temps make everyone crave cozy nights and nostalgic scents.

You’ll also find Gold Rush Wax Co. in shops across the Motherlode region, including right here at The Motherlode Co.

Art & Science

What many don’t realize? Candle-making isn’t easy. As Amy puts it, “It’s not just melt, pour, light.” Each candle requires precise balance between wax, fragrance, and wick.

To perfect Black Bart’s Brew, Amy tested 18 different wicks. That’s the kind of detail you can’t fake — and the kind of dedication that defines every Gold Rush Wax product.

What’s Next

Amy’s planning new collections centered around Outlaws, Trailblazers, and the legends of the Wild West — rugged, masculine scents with heart. She’s also expanding her line of room sprays and exploring collaborations with museums and historic gift shops across California.

Fall & Winter lineup: a cozy autumn vignette reminiscent of Apple Harvest, Pumpkin Caramel, and more.

Gold Rush Wax Co. is everything we love about small makers — creative, intentional, and rich with local storytelling. From Mokelumne Hill to shelves across the region, Amy’s candles bring history home with every burn.
